Technical Manager

Guardian is a small but rapidly expanding business with an international client-base offers a challenging and fascinating position in Wales for the management of a development team specialising in low volume, precision, downhole electro-mechanical instrumentation for the worldwide oil and gas industry.  Guardian is located in a brand new, purpose-built facility close to the bustling capital city of Cardiff, and is a short drive from the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian mountains and the delightful Heritage Coast. 

Managing a small but growing development group which encourages individual initiative, the entrepreneurial appointee will assume full responsibility for the successful on-going development of a wide range of oil-well logging equipment, including downhole measuring instruments operating at up to 200°C and 30,000psi, surface equipment and software. 

Reporting to the Technical Director, the role offers significant autonomy for taking a hands-on approach and guiding the innovative design of new products within the scope of the technical strategy laid down by the board.  This is a key appointment which forms part of our growth strategy within the business.

 
Ideal Candidate

Graduate-level electronics/physics engineer with a minimum of 15 years experience in the project management, design and development of oil-well logging and data acquisition instrumentation, ideally with experience of  open-hole tools, production logging, cement bond and casing inspection equipment.  This experience will probably have been obtained from one of the major, or large independent, service companies or an OEM. 

•    Proven ability to effectively lead and develop reportee engineers and technicians;
•    Ability to manage several concurrent projects to time and budget;
•    Creativity to bring new ideas and solutions to client problems;
•    Able to drive the design process from concept creation to pre-production prototype build and beyond;
•    Experience in high-temperature design (to 200°C);
•    A naturally a hands-on, ‘make-it-happen’ approach;
•    The ability to provide technical support to both our clients and our manufacturing operations is essential;
•    Commitment to Quality and excellence in customer service and an appreciation of the concepts of continuous improvement are fundamental;
•    Experience in the management and control of high quality technical documentation;
•    The ability and personality to fit into and work as part of a close-knit team is vital;
